I am not "ethnic" so maybe I don't know all the details of characteristics and usage in ethnic food.
However I can compare this belacan with the other one I've tried--either by taste plain or when mixed into rice, gravies, or greens--North South Belacan 10 oz, and this one is notably superior. In addition to not being packed in "hygienic" sealed package, the North South has much more salt [so you can't use as much before the salt overcomes any fermented flavor] and obnoxious pieces of what might have been sand or large hard and sharp shell pieces which crunch the teeth and have to be filtered or suffered [I suppose this stuff needs to be combined with mortar and pestle]. Also very hard to incorporate into liquid. North South has what is described as "foot odor" smell which some say is authentic, but does not come out when mixed into food. Almost no shrimp taste, dark taste.
This belacan, in comparison, has profound and tangy umami taste, smooth taste, no crunchy fragments, dissolves easily, has mild taste when mixed in sauce, and has a small but noticeable shrimp taste.
So to my way of thinking, this is great product, for snacking on or to make sauce, etc.
Also, the price is lower, both compared to North South paste and other shrimp sauces or fish sauces. Furthermore, buying from Yummi is less expensive than through Amazon.
